UNIQUE BUSINESS IDENTIFIERS are a key element in electronic business. In automated processes the appropriate identifier has to be applied at a specific process step.
To support this, ID Cyber-Identity Ltd created and runs an umbrella for unique business identifiers.

About

mail In the old days, business documents were written on paper, enveloped and brought to the post office. The recipient opened the letter and fed the document into the foreseen manual business process, i.e. people did take care of the papers.
Nowadays, these business processes are more and more automated which means that computerized systems handle these processes and relieve people from this manual work.

digital_transmission If you see the terms Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), Straight Through Processing (STP) or read about the format eXtensible Markup Language (XML): These are all examples of technologies that serve the purpose of automated processing.
ID Cyber-Identity Ltd. is working in this field when it comes to unique business identifiers as these are the basis for all electronic transactions. A unique business identifier points to a company - or more generally an organization - or anything related to this organization (an organizational unit, a product etc).

What is necessary for the automatic processing of electronic documents?

  • It requires structured grouping of information.
  • AND it requires a layout and content of this information that enables the reading and processing by different electronic systems.

abacus To process automatically the structured content of business information one needs specific codes (e.g. currency codes) and in particular unique business identifiers which designate the parties involved.

Enterprise Resource Planning, Supply Chain Management, Accounting and other eBusiness systems provide specific entries in the master data for specific identifier types.

spaghetti However, there are different systems of unique business identifiers in place; the use of these identifiers is often specific to application areas (e.g. supply chain management, payment systems, rating of companies, conformity assessment). To make things worse, the connection and convergence of electronic systems through the Internet have blurred the boundaries between these contexts to fuzzy shapes. The interoperability - i.e. the ability to understand each other - of these systems has therefore become an issue of paramount importance.

What does this mean for unique business identifiers? In automatic processing, it must be crystal clear which identifier has to be applied in which context.
So, you might have the right business identifier of a company, but you still need to know in which context it is used.
E.g. a search with the official identifier of a company in the phone directory will not provide a result. You need to know the appropriate context, i.e. that it is an official identifier, in which country it is issued and the address of the authoritative official directory.

umbrella Therefore, an umbrella system over the different kinds of identifiers is needed for interoperability when moving from a paper based document exchange to an automated business data flow.

The business of ID Cyber-Identity Ltd is to provide services related to this umbrella system. Its activities comprehend:

  • To promote the better usage of reliable business information stored in trustworthy registries (official commercial registries as well as privately owned and operated directories) by applying existing ISO and Internet standards.
  • To provide the interoperability of different types of logical identifiers pointing to such registries and directories like official company register numbers, VAT numbers or important private identifiers.
  • To set up a service for the validation of such logical identifiers by forming a federation of Trusted Third Parties recognizing a set of registration schemes for such business identifiers.
