Document examples

Below we have listed some examples about the usage of unique identifiers in different kinds of business documents:

  • UBL

    The Universal Business Language (UBL) is a set of XML-based standardized business documents in the order-to-invoice cycle. It was developed within OASIS.
    A specific example, taken from the OASIS ebCore Party Id Type Technical Specification Version 1.0 is the following:

    <cac:BuyerCustomerParty>
      <cac:Party>
       <cac:PartyIdentification>
        <cbc:ID schemeID="urn:oasis:names:tc:ebcore:partyid-type:iso6523:0088" >
        4035811991021
        </cbc:ID>
       </cac:PartyIdentification>
      </cac:Party>
    </cac:BuyerCustomerParty>

    <cac:SellerSupplierParty>
      <cac:Party>
       <cac:PartyIdentification>
        <cbc:ID schemeID="urn:oasis:names:tc:ebcore:partyid-type:iso6523:0088" >
        4035811991014
        </cbc:ID>
       </cac:PartyIdentification>
      </cac:Party>
    </cac:SellerSupplierParty>

    Explanation: The above excerpt from a UBL document contains the unique identifiers of the buyer ("BuyerCustomerParty") and the supplyer ("SellerSupplierParty") of a business transaction. The Uniform Resource Name (URN) dedicating the identifier scheme in the ID-tag ends with "0088".
    This designates the usage of a GS1 GLN in the body of the ID-tag.

  • XBRL

    The eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) is an XML-based language to create electronic documents for financial reporting, e.g. the annual report.
    A specific example, taken from the OASIS ebCore Party Id Type Technical Specification Version 1.0 is the following:

    <xbrli:xbrl
    ...
    >
      <xbrli:context id="cd0">
        <xbrli:entity>
          <xbrli:identifier scheme= "urn:oasis:names:tc:ebcore:partyid-type:iso6523:0106" >
          24051830
          </xbrli:identifier>
        </xbrli:entity>
        <xbrli:period>
          <xbrli:startDate>
          2009-07-01
          </xbrli:startDate>
          <xbrli:endDate>
          2010-06-30
          </xbrli:endDate>
        </xbrli:period>
    ...
      </xbrli:context>
    ...
    </xbrli:xbrl>

    Explanation:

    In the above extract of an XBRL-document the identifier-tag has a scheme-attribute with a value that contains a Uniform Resource Name (URN) ending with 0106. This indicates that the number in the body of the identifier-tag is issued by the Dutch Chambers of Commerce.

  • X.509-certificates

    A special kind of business documents are X.509-certificates as used within Public Key Infrastructures (PKI). It is sometimes also a need to include a unique business identifier in an X.509-certificate.
    Below you see sections of X.509-certificates:

    Example 1:

    CN = www.verisign.com
    OU = Production Security Services
    O = VeriSign, Inc.
    STREET = 487 East Middlefield Road
    L = Mountain View
    ST = California
    PostalCode = 94043
    C = US
    SERIALNUMBER = 2497886
    businessCategory = V1.0, Clause 5.(b)
    jurisdictionOfIncorporationStateOrProvinceName = Delaware
    jurisdictionOfIncorporationCountryName = US

    Example 2:

    CN = www.cyber-identity.com
    O = ID Cyber-Identity Ltd
    L = Rueschlikon
    ST = Zuerich
    C = CH
    SERIALNUMBER = urn:oasis:names:tc:ebcore:partyid-type:iso6523:0169:02030303080

    Explanation:
    In these examples you see two sections of X.509-certificates, the so called "Distinguished Names" (DN's) of the organizations holding these certificates. In the examples these DN's contain parts like the organization's name or its country of residence. They also contain a part that is called the "Serialnumber". (For the PKI-experts: This part is not to be mixed up with the certificate's serial number.)
    in example 1 this Serialnumber is an official registration number for a legal entity in the US-state of Delaware.
    In example 2 it is an official Swiss business register number (which is indicated by the four digits "0169" in the Uniform Resource Name -URN).
